Tichelaar Makkum Delft Vintage Tobacco Jar Table Lamp – Rappe
Meet Rappe, a one-of-a-kind table lamp crafted from a rare vintage Royal Tichelaar Makkum Delft tobacco jar, produced between 1940 and 1960. Traditionally, jars like this were used to store tabac râpé—a finely ground snuff tobacco, hence the name "Rappe."
This jar is an outstanding example of hand-painted Delft pottery, adorned with intricate ornamental motifs in rich shades of blue. The detailed patterns showcase the artistry and precision of Tichelaar Makkum’s craftsmanship, framed by designs influenced by traditional Dutch decorative arts, adding a timeless elegance to any setting.
The lamp is paired with a custom-made pleated lampshade, crafted from a vintage Indian silk sari in complementary tones of deep blue and red. The pleating introduces a touch of sophistication that harmonizes beautifully with the jar’s structured, symmetrical form, creating a captivating balance of texture and color.
Signed with the Royal Tichelaar Makkum mark, this piece is an authentic representation of Dutch heritage and craftsmanship. Transformed into a functional art piece, Rappe is more than just a lamp—it’s a collector’s item, perfect for bringing a sense of history and refinement to any living room or bedroom.

Much of the most beautiful modern Delftware comes from the Tichelaar factory in the quaint fishing village of Makkum. Preserving the centuries old tradition passed on by the 13 generations of Tichelaars, nearly all the production is still done by hand. Koninklijke Tichelaar (1572) is the oldest ceramics company in the Netherlands based in Makkum, Friesland. After initially producing bricks and tiles, the company has focused on traditional decorative pottery since 1890. In 1960, the company received the Royal predicate on the occasion of its 300th anniversary. Royal Tichelaar Makkum takes its long history seriously without resting on their laurels. They continue to experiment, bringing together classic craftsmanship, contemporary design and research for the future.
